VICATS stands for Video Content Analysis for Automated Traffic Surveillance. The majority of contemporary surveillance systems rely heavily on intensive human effort to detect and assess threats and critical situations, which makes them unreliable and susceptible to subjective errors. In most situations, currently deployed systems are used for accidents analyzing, rather than for critical situation prediction and statistics.

The URSUS group is actively participating in FP7 and EUREKA European projects.VICATS project aims at developing fully automated real-time surveillance system that gathers detailed information on traffic conditions and assesses threats. The VICATS system should be used for pedestrian detection, queue detection, vehicle classification, vehicle counting, average speed calculation, detection of violation of speed limit or some other traffic regulation etc.

EUREKA VICATS project started on 1st October 2007, and it aims at developing novel robust real-time video content analysis algorithms for video surveillance and traffic monitoring with a special focus on video surveillance of tunnels and bridges. The URSUS group’s partners in this project are University of Ghent, Belgium, Traficon N.V., Belgium, University College Ghent, Belgium and Fitis-Ju, Serbia.
