When you visit the dentist’s office, you probably hear about gum disease. Dentists tell you to avoid it and recommend as lot of daily procedures to help you avoid it. As is often the case with busy professionals, your dentist may have never explained very clearly why you should try to avoid this malady of the mouth.

There are some obvious and not-so-obvious reasons to take care of your mouth. A lot of people do not need a whole lot of additional incentive to do this. They know that one thing gum will do is affect their appearance and their breath.

The most disturbing evidence about this connection concerns heart disease. Heart disease is a leading killer in the United States and many other countries. The evidence does not necessarily suggest that gum disease directly causes heart disease. It may be that the same lifestyle brings on both conditions. Nevertheless, there is no good reason to risk heart disease simply because you do not want to brush and floss.
Other Health Effects of Gum Disease
Not taking good care of your mouth and compounding the problem with a diet high in sugar and fat can make things worse. Researchers have also noted a strong correlation between people with gum disease and people with type 2 diabetes. This disease ruins your body’s ability to absorb sugar. It can lead to blindness and even death if not properly treated.
How to Avoid Gum Disease
Avoiding gum disease is not hard. You need to follow your dentist’s instructions when you have your next visit. These will probably include brushing two or three times per day. Many people fail to do the second thing that oral hygienists and dentists ask: floss their teeth. This action removes food particles from between teeth and prevents cavities from forming in the hardest-to-reach places. It also helps you to fight bad breath.
Preventing gum disease should be high on your list of priorities. After eating right and exercising, you should be taking good care of your mouth. That will give you as much assurance of overall good health as anything else. With a clean mouth, you can feel free to smile.
